Dental fillings by Colin Maher BDS (Cork)

When does a dental filling need to be replaced ...

A dental filling is generally  intended to replace tooth structure lost to decay. Although they may last many years, eventually all fillings need to be replaced. Constant assault from eating and drinking, or stress from clenching or grinding ,eventually may cause a filling to fail.

A filling that fails provides an entry point for bacteria...

The seal that breaks down between the tooth and the filling allows food particles and decay-causing bacteria to work their way between the worn filling and the tooth. As a result decay  may develop along the edge of the filling or underneath it.

How can I tell if my filling is ‘leaking’ ...

Although patients cannot tell if their filling is failing, your dentist uses an instrument called an explorer to gently detect any worn spots around the filling’s edge. Colour changes detected visually as well as x-rays help detect decay under exiting fillings or between teeth.

Consequences of delaying early intervention ...

Decay that is undiagnosed and untreated can progress to infect the tooth’s nerve and blood supply which often results in the need for root canal treatment and/or more invasive dental treatments. Don’t wait until the tooth hurts or a crack appears as early detection and treatment minimizes the need for extensive and costly procedures.
