Onlays

An Onlay Is A Restoration Made By A Technician In A Dental Laboratory. They Can Be Made Of Metal (Gold) Or Porcelain. They Are Used In Situations Where The Tooth Has A Very Large Filling In Place, Or Where The Tooth Has A Deep Crack. 2 Appointments Are Needed To Complete The Treatment. At First Visit The Tooth Is Cleaned And Shaped. This Will Usually Require Local Anaesthetic. Once The Tooth Has Been Prepared An Impression Is Taken Of The Tooth. This Impression Will Be Sent To Our Technician Who Will Use It To Pour Up A Model On Which The Onlay Will Be Made – Either Gold Or Porcelain. Finally, A Tooth Coloured Temporary Onlay Will Be Made And Securely Fitted. The Second Visit Will Be Approx 2 Weeks Later. This Will Again Require Local Anaesthetic. The Temporaray Onlay Is Gently Removed And Replaced With The Permanent Onlay (Gold Or Porcelain) And Bonded With A Very Strong Bond, Some Temporary Sensitivity From The Tooth For A Few Days After Either Of The Sessions Could Occur.

Dentures

Dentures Are Removaable Prostheses Which Replace Missing Teeth. They Can Be Used To Replace A Single Tooth Or An Entire Arch. They Are Either Made Entirely Of Acrylic, Or Of Both Metal And Acrylic. The Metal Is Called Chrome Cobalt. It Takes Approx 4 Visits, Each Visit A Week Apart, To Produce A Denture. At The First Visit Impressions Of The Jaws Are Taken. At The Second Visit Further More Accurate Impressions Are Taken And The Bite Is Recorder. At The Third Visist The Denture, In An Unfinished Form, Is Tried In To Ensure The Fit Is Good. The Final Visit Is The Fitting And The Patient Leaves With The Denture. In Some Situations A Patient May Require Extractions As Well As A Denture. In Such Case We Do What Is Callled An Immediate Denture. This Means The Denture Is Made Before The Teeth Are Extracted In The Same Method Described Above. When The Denture Is Ready The Teeth To Be Extracted Are Removed And The Denture Is Fitted. The Benefit To The Patient Being They Are Never Toothless.
