What are lingual braces?

They are fixed orthodontic appliances which are placed on the inner side of the teeth and are therefore hidden from view.

 

What are the advantages of having lingual braces?

Lingual braces are hardly visible and are the most discrete method available to orthodontists to straighten teeth. Occasionally when treatment is completed and braces are removed, teeth can be left with permanent stains. This is not a concern with lingual braces as in the unlikely event a mark is left, it would be on the inner side of the teeth, out of sight.

What are the disadvantages of having lingual braces?

Sometimes lingual braces can be more difficult to get used to. It is normal to experience some discomfort for the first week or so, and the tongue may rub on the brace. There is also a short period when speech may be slightly affected. Also treatment sessions for follow-up appointments during the period of treatment process may take longer than conventional braces.

Who can be suitable for lingual braces?

Most adults may be suitable candidates. Lingual braces allow good control of tooth movements and are very precise so they can treat mild to complex cases.

Is it difficult to clean the teeth?

All it takes is proper brushing and flossing—and regular appointments with your hygienist — to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.
