Poor Oral Hygiene Treatment | Roseneath Dental Practice

Did you know? Poor oral hygiene may lead to gum disease and will reduce the longevity of your dental restorations. It is important to be aware that gum disease is linked to many systemic diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and various cancers.

I brush twice a day – do I still need to see a hygienist?

Teeth have complex shapes and positions. Plaque builds up because of inefficient homecare and regular professional cleanings by a hygienist are therefore essential.

How often should I see the hygienist?

Plaque matures and produces acid after 90 days. Seeing a hygienist every 3 months eliminates the risk of cavities and gum disease developing.

Aren’t mouthwashes just as good?

Mouthwashes are useful as an additional tool to brushing and flossing – particularly the alcohol-free, fluoride range. But they are certainly not miracle cures. Nothing beats good brushing and flossing.

What about electric toothbrushes?

Electric toothbrushes are clinically proven to be far more effective than conventional toothbrushes and we recommend them to both children (from the age of 3) and adults.

Do certain mouths require more care?

Children and adolescents should have 6-monthly dental examinations and professional cleanings. Adults should have their teeth cleaned every 3 months to eliminate the risk of problems. A 3-monthly program is essential if one has had complex treatments such as dental implants or is being treated for gum disease.
